Style like a Grandma: Go Grandmillennial

May 31, 2021|In SD Blog|By Rachel

Grandmillennial is a term coined by House Beautiful magazine that has become one of 2021’s most popular styles growing in popularity over the past few years. This industry defines this style by having mixed patterns, florals, pops of color, etc. The overall vintage feel can bring generations together. If you or your clients find this style cozy and appealing, incorporating the following aspects of this nostalgic style trend can make your design beloved by Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z alike.

FLORAL PRINTS

Suzanne Rheinstein sets an excellent example for designers looking to master floral patterns in her classic interiors. She is best known for her emphasis on comfort and the use of unique antiques shown in this charming room featuring a floral headboard and bed skirt and the two canopy beds seen in the above image. The patterns give a calm and timeless feel.

COLORFUL WALLS

Rita Konig is a London-based interior designer whose overall style is an elegant interpretation of Grandmillenial. The colorful paisley wall brings a sense of familiarity and brightens up the sun-soaked room. Rita “believes the best kind of rooms are those that make you want to come in, sit down and stay awhile” (R.Konig). When entering this room, relaxing is precisely what you or your client would want to do.

BOLD COUCHES AND CHAIRS

Studio Designer client Kelly Wearstler’s super-luxe style harkens to 1970s vintage and is a fresh spin on grand millennial style like her design of Charmaine’s a rooftop lounge in San Francisco’s Proper Hotel. The unconventional shape of the couch, coupled with its boisterous print and occasional solid chairs, makes the room feel exclusive and luxurious.

DECORATIVE LAMP SHADES

Sorella Glenn is a lampshade company that makes solid and patterned lampshades that can enhance any “Granny-Chic” design. Lampshades can stand out on their own or add a unique touch to an already unusual space. A multi-generational accent piece is used in a range of homes, consider adding them to your next project.

MIXED PATTERNS

Studio Designer client Michael S. Smith’s masterful mixing patterns are a high-end example of the Grandmillenial style, especially this home in Los Angeles. Each item creates a special connection to one another; the floral carpeting accentuates the softly colored, yet boldly striped loveseats. The multi-colored curtains emphasize the large windows. They are great pieces to showcase the granny chic style.
