Hearth of the Home: Fireplace Decor

April 7, 2021|In SD Blog|By Rachel

For millennia, fireplaces have been a central gathering place in homes delivering warmth, light, and beauty that can represent the overall style and mood of a home interior. For interior designers, fireplaces present a prime creative opportunity to fully express their signature decoration and design skills whether they transform an existing fireplace or design a new one from scratch. Here are five notable designers whose design aesthetic, vision, and even their relationship with clients are all vividly expressed in these impressive and varied fireplace designs.

REATH DESIGN

Studio Designer user Reath Design was founded in 2009 by Frances Merrill where they create “immersive interiors that tell the story of their inhabitants and improve our experience of place.” The Georgina project is a beautiful representation of their skills in decorating a fireplace, especially the glossy green tile that informs the color palette throughout the residence. As the focal point of this room, this fireplace is charming and elegant and makes the entire room brighter.

SELLDORF

Founded by Annabelle Selldorf, Selldorf Architects is an architecture and design firm with a concise and contemporary feel. Each design brings meaning to a different experience to the client. This showstopping room features a streamlined fireplace decorated with a minimal mantle that seems perfectly placed in this spacious room. The gorgeous gold and velvet couches flank the fireplace in beautiful, glamorous symmetry.

MARK HAMPTON BY ALEXA HAMPTON

Alexa Hampton took over her father Mark Hampton’s firm where she expanded the classical, elegant styles to suit modern living. This Manhattan apartment is a fine example of her ability to make classic pieces reflect everyday living. Her design of this lovely living room centers the classic fireplace between two inset bookshelves that nicely frames the television.

COREY DAMEN JENKINS

Studio Designer user Corey Damen Jenkins, the founder of CDJ, a nationally acclaimed design firm, focuses on helping homeowners make their homes unique to them. In House Beautiful Magazine, he stated, “I approach design like a doctor delivering a baby: At the end of the day, it’s not my kid—it’s yours, and it should look like you.” In this charming Connecticut home, pops of color and vintage furniture are the highlights of how he decorated around the fireplace. Corey recovered almost 30 pieces of the owner’s old furniture to craft this engaging space (this Instagram post describes precisely how he repurposed his clients’ old things).

ELLEN NYSTROM

Studio Designer user Ellen Nystrom founded her design firm in 2009 by Ellen Nystrom and beautifully aligns with her client’s vision to craft aspirational interiors.  For this extraordinary Berkeley Hills residence, she painted the fireplace a monochrome white that nicely offsets the vibrant blue of the paint in the room. She decorated the area around the fireplace masterfully by incorporating African and Armenian artifacts and cherished furniture and art that the client’s father-in-law collected.
